located at 4.100 m.a.s.l. This place is part of the Reserva
Nacional Los Flamencos and is administered by the native community
of Socaire. The eruption of the Miñiques volcano about
one million years ago caused the damming of the water that
used to flow to the salt flat, giving origin to these altiplano
lagoons with blue water and white shores. The finding of earthenware
and arrowheads confirm the occupation of this place between,
4.000 and 3.000 year BC. On the way back to San Pedro de Atacama
we pass along Socaire, a village of
pre-Columbian origin, known nowadays for its typical Atacaman
food. It is the last Atacaman village before crossing to Argentina.

a.m., when atmospheric pressure generates huge steam columns
that spring from the ground, producing a contrast between
the mountains and the deep blue sky. On the way back we will
pass along Machuca, an Atacama village
which main activities are shepherding and will show its marsh,
ducks and andean sea gulls.
